Have you been bullied in the past, and still feel the effects today?
You’re not alone.
Many adults carry the emotional scars of childhood bullying into their adult lives.
The good news?
There are simple, compassionate strategies you can start using right now to begin the healing process.
My passion is making therapy accessible for everyone. That’s I share easy-to-use tools from proven therapies so you can feel calmer, more confident, and in control.
Why does bullying affect us for so long?
Bullying isn’t just “kids being kids.” It’s a form of emotional or physical harm that can leave deep marks on our self-esteem and the way we see the world.
Years later, we might still find ourselves feeling anxious, defensive, or stuck in old patterns of thinking.
Tips for starting to move forward
- Self-soothing over distraction
Instead of simply taking your mind off bad memories, learn to calm your mind and body.- Visualise a happy place or memory.
- Listen to calming music or enjoy a walk in nature.
- Use scents or photographs that make you smile.
- Compassion-focused visualisation
Imagine your strong, compassionate adult self standing up for the younger you, telling the bully to stop and protecting that inner child. This builds resilience and helps shift your focus to your strengths. - Know your values
Ask yourself: What kind of person do I want to be now? Then take daily actions that align with that, whether it’s learning a new skill, joining a group, or practising small acts of kindness. - Change your inner dialogue
Replace harmful self-talk (“I’m weak”) with: “I’m having an unhelpful thought right now, it doesn’t mean it’s true.” This creates a healthier relationship with your thoughts. - Stay present with mindfulness
Bring yourself back to the here and now. Remind yourself: This is a past memory. I’m safe now.
What are the next steps?
- Try one of these techniques today, start small, and build on your progress.
- Write a compassionate letter to yourself, reframing the bullying experience so it no longer defines you.
- If you’d like more support, explore therapies like EMDR or guided imagery.
Remember: You are more than what happened to you.
