Why resolutions matter and why we make them

Why do resolutions matter? Should I even make them? No one sticks to New Year New Me!

Many of us wonder whether we need to make drastic changes at the start of a new year. When life already feels full, overwhelming or emotionally heavy, the idea of setting resolutions can feel both hopeful and exhausting. But resolutions don’t need to mean drastic change.

We can decide to make small positive changes and add in little things to our everyday life to cope better with stress, anxiety and general everyday life!

So why do resolutions matter?

They give us a chance to pause

Many of us move through life on autopilot, dealing with stress, responsibilities, anxiety and the emotional leftovers of a difficult year.

Resolutions give us a moment to breathe. They invite reflection. They help us think about what feels meaningful rather than simply what feels urgent.

This is one of the biggest reasons why they may be useful for people who rarely slow down.

They give our values direction

In an episode of The Talk Room podcast, I co-host with Ian Stockbridge, we discuss how important values are in shaping goals.

They act like a compass. When we know what we care about, we can make choices that feel steady instead of rushed.

Looking at your values helps you understand why resolutions matter because they become less about perfection and more about living in line with who you want to be.

Resolutions can offer hope

Life can feel uncertain. When stress or anxiety builds, it is natural to reach for something that brings clarity.

Resolutions can give us that. They remind us that change is possible. They allow us to imagine a calmer, healthier, more connected version of ourselves.

A reset, not a rule

They can also create a psychological reset.

They don’t need to be strict or overwhelming. They simply offer a fresh starting point, a moment where you choose to care for your wellbeing. When approached with compassion rather than pressure, resolutions can be grounding rather than stressful.
