Have you just started Acceptance and Commitment Therapy? Have you thought why is ACT therapy so hard? So did I at first..
When we begin using ACT in everyday life, we often whisper the same thing. It feels surprisingly tough.
Not because the ideas are complicated but because ACT asks us to meet our inner world with honesty instead of trying to outrun it. That first step can feel bigger than we expect. But that does not mean we are doing anything wrong.
Seeing things clearly can feel uncomfortable
In my conversation with Ian Stockbridge on one episode of our podcast, The Talk Room, he explained how ACT invites us to notice our experience exactly as it is. No exaggeration. No avoiding. Just seeing.
And this is one of the hidden reasons why we feel it is so hard.
Looking at our thoughts with gentle awareness can feel like staring into bright light. Our minds naturally want to turn away. Old stories rush in. We may even feel frustrated that it is still uncomfortable. But the discomfort does not mean failure. It means we are touching something real.
Why is ACT therapy so hard in the beginning
The early stage of ACT can feel awkward because it invites us to pause in places we normally rush through.
It asks us to gently step back from thoughts we may have carried for years and to create space in parts of our mind that are used to feeling crowded. It is a bit like opening a cupboard we have avoided for a long time.
Everything tumbles out at once. It feels messy and overwhelming. But then, slowly, we begin to see what is actually there and what we might finally be ready to let go of.
Helpful reminders when ACT feels tough
When everything feels heavy, keep these simple thoughts close
- You are learning a new skill and skills take time
- You are not meant to feel calm during every step
- You can pause and breathe whenever needed
- Nothing needs fixing in that moment
- Small steps count more than big leaps
Let your values guide you forward
Ian described values as a compass that helps you find your next small move. When ACT feels messy that compass becomes even more important. If kindness is one of your values, you might speak to yourself gently. If courage is important to you, you might show up even when your legs are shaking. These choices seem tiny but they shape your days in ways that matter.
You are not getting it wrong
So the next time you catch yourself wondering why is ACT therapy so hard, remind yourself of this one truth. Hard does not mean failing. Hard often means growing.
You are learning to meet your mind with more space and softness. With time those small shifts feel like opening a window after breathing stale air for years. Keep going. You are further along than you think.
