The risks of using Chatbots (or AI) for mental health and how to reduce them

The risks of using Chatbots (or AI) for mental health support are not always obvious at first.

Many people assume that because something sounds supportive, it must also be safe. This is not always the case.

Understanding mental health chatbots risks

One of the main risks of using Chatbots for mental health support is that AI can miss warning signs. It does not truly understand distress, context, or urgency. It can also misinterpret symptoms or offer advice that is too general.

Another risk is that AI may reinforce unhelpful thinking patterns without realising it.

Knowing when to use AI and when to seek human expert help is key.

Emotional reliance and mental health chatbots risks

A less talked about risk in using chatbots for mental health support is emotional reliance.

When someone turns to a chatbot every time they feel distressed, it can reduce real-world connection and increase reassurance seeking.

Over time, this can make anxiety or low mood harder to manage.

You need to remember that isolating yourself and not having some form of human interaction can be detrimental to your mental health.

Privacy and mental health chatbots risks

Privacy is another area of concern. Mental health chatbot risks include data storage, sharing, and a lack of clear accountability.

Not all platforms are transparent about how information is used.

Avoid sharing identifying or highly sensitive details.

Using chatbots more safely

Treat chatbots like a coping aid, not a decision maker. Use them for grounding, journaling, or reflection, and check important decisions with a human expert.

I cover some safety considerations in more detail on my latest podcast episode, Don’t Get a Therapist Yet, and on my blog page.

If you feel unsafe or your symptoms are worsening, reaching out to a trained professional matters.
