It is completely normal to struggle with resolutions, we just need a plan to get back on track.
Many of us think that slipping up means we have failed, but no one is perfect!
What matters is how you support yourself when challenges appear and how you find the strength to get back on track gently.
Expect setbacks
In one of The Talk Room podcast I co-host with Ian Stockbridge, we talk about the importance of planning for barriers.
Life is unpredictable. Stress builds, motivation dips and real life gets in the way.
When you expect setbacks, it becomes easier to get back on track because you no longer see obstacles as personal failures.
Reflect, don’t criticise
Take a moment to pause.
Ask yourself what made things difficult. Were you tired, overwhelmed, emotionally drained or just busy?
Reflection helps you understand what you need rather than pushing yourself with harsh self-talk. This kinder approach makes it much easier to get back on track.
Adjust your goals
Sometimes goals need to be smaller, simpler or more aligned with your values.
Adjusting your goals is not giving up. It is a sign of insight and self-awareness.
When you soften expectations, you create space to get back on track without pressure.
Sometimes the motivation just won’t be there, but that is when you need to reply on self-discipline. Especially if it’s going to the gym or eating healthier.
Rebuild gently
Return to one small action.
One mindful breath.
One walk outside.
One message to someone you care about.
Even the smallest action helps you get back on track because it resets your momentum and brings a sense of progress.
Celebrate your resilience
Noticing your efforts, even when things are tough, builds motivation. Your brain needs these reminders.
Acknowledging progress helps you stay hopeful and encourages you to return to your goals again and again.
