creating safety after trauma starts with some self love

Creating Safety After Trauma

Creating safety after trauma is often the first step towards feeling more like yourself again.

After a traumatic experience, your nervous system may stay in survival mode. Even when life feels calmer on the outside, your body may still react as if danger is nearby. This can feel exhausting and confusing.

Why safety matters

When your body feels safer, your mind can begin to relax. Creating safety after trauma allows your system to settle, which reduces overwhelm and helps you cope with everyday life.

This does not mean ignoring what happened. It means reminding your body that you are safe right now.

Grounding techniques you can try

Simple grounding tools can help bring you back into the present moment:

  • Place your feet flat on the floor and notice the support beneath you
  • Take slow breaths, breathing out slightly longer than you breathe in
  • Name five things you can see around you

These techniques help signal to your nervous system that the danger has passed.

Creating a sense of comfort

Many people find it helpful to create a calming routine or safe place. This could be a favourite chair, a quiet room, or an imagined space where you feel relaxed. Pay attention to what helps your body soften.

Creating safety after trauma takes practice. Some days it may feel easier than others. That is normal. Each time you practise, you are teaching your body that safety is possible again.
