Can AI replace therapy?

People are using their phones and computers for to help with a lot of day to day life, but can AI replace therapy?

There are many different reasons why people would turn to AI for support. Maybe you feel stuck because of the cost of therapy, or the long waiting lists, or worry about speaking with someone face to face.

It is understandable that you want some reassurance no matter where that comes from. Social media is rarely a place of positivity so people seek guidance from AI apps. But is AI going to take over real human expert advice?

What AI can realistically offer

AI can respond quickly, and that can feel comforting in challenging moments.

It cannot form a therapeutic relationship, assess ongoing risk, or adapt care based on nuanced emotional responses the way a human can.

What it can do is give some guidance as to what to do in that moment to help organise your thoughts. A temporary fix.

AI cannot replace clinical judgment, emotional attunement, safeguarding, and accountability. These are skills built through training, experience, and ethical practice that AI is not designed to replicate.

Relying on AI as a replacement can delay support when symptoms worsen or become more complex.

How to use AI alongside therapy

Used alongside real care, AI can be supportive between sessions or help structure skills discussed with a therapist. This balanced approach ensures you get the benefits of both guided human help and practical tools that support your self-management.
