How to recover from burnout and feel like yourself again

How to recover from burnout starts with reconnecting to yourself. Burnout doesn’t just make you tired, it slowly drains your motivation, dulls your emotions and leaves you feeling disconnected from who you are. The good news is that recovery is possible and it can start with small, kind steps.

What does burnout really feel like?

Burnout can sneak up on anyone. You might notice you’re exhausted even after sleep, struggling to concentrate or losing interest in things you used to enjoy. You might also feel detached, unmotivated or hopeless. These are signs that your mind and body need a pause, not more pressure.

So, how to recover from burnout in a healthy, realistic way? It begins by recognising that burnout isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a signal from your body and mind asking for care.

Simple steps that really help

From my podcast episode, here are a few of the most effective ways to begin recovery:

1. Set realistic goals
Break big tasks into small steps. Instead of “sort out everything”, try “reply to one email” or “finish one short task”. Small wins reduce the feeling of overwhelm and rebuild confidence.

2. Schedule proper rest
Rest isn’t scrolling on your phone. Rest means doing something that truly calms you, a walk, a nap, a quiet moment with a cup of tea. Treat rest as important as any meeting.

3. Challenge unhelpful thoughts
When your mind says “I’m failing” or “I can’t cope”, ask, “Is that really true?” Replace harsh thoughts with balanced ones, such as “I’m doing my best right now and that’s enough.”

4. Reconnect with your values
Ask yourself what really matters. Maybe it’s family, creativity or kindness. When your daily actions match your values, life starts to feel more meaningful, even when things are tough.

5. Talk it out
Sharing how you feel with a friend, family member or therapist lightens the load. You don’t have to have it all figured out to ask for support.
