Stop letting uncertainty run your life!
If you spend a lot of time worrying about things that haven’t happened yet, replaying conversations in your head, checking your phone more than you’d like to admit, or lying awake running through every possible outcome, this recent episode of my podcast “Don’t get a therapist yet” was made for you.
You can stop letting uncertainty run your life, and it starts with understanding why your brain behaves this way in the first place.
Why uncertainty is so frightening
Your brain is wired to seek safety through prediction.
When it cannot find certainty, it treats the unknown as a threat. That is when the overthinking kicks in, the reassurance seeking starts, and the worry begins to feel completely out of control.
None of this means you are weak or dramatic. It means your mind is doing exactly what it evolved to do, just a little too much of it.
Nearly one in four UK adults reported high anxiety in 2024, and rates of generalised anxiety disorder have risen sharply over the past decade.
So if uncertainty regularly sends you into a spiral, you are very far from alone.
What this episode covers
- Why worry feels like problem solving but actually keeps anxiety going
- How uncertainty shows up differently for men and women
- The physical signs your threat system is on overdrive, including poor sleep, muscle tension and restlessness
- The cycle of checking, avoidance and reassurance seeking that keeps you stuck
Practical tools to use every day to stop letting uncertainty run your life
You do not need to be in therapy to benefit from these ideas.
This episode draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ACT, mindfulness, Compassion Focused Therapy CFT, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy DBT and Internal Family Systems to give you genuinely useful, everyday approaches that you can start using right away.
One of the biggest shifts you can make is moving away from waiting to feel certain before you act.
Real confidence comes from taking small steps while uncertainty is still there, not after it disappears.
When you stop letting uncertainty run your life, you are learning to notice the thought, breathe through the feeling, and take one small step forward anyway.
You are more capable than your anxiety tells you
The goal is to trust yourself to handle it, and that trust genuinely grows with practice. This episode will show you exactly how to stop letting uncertainty run your life.
Have a listen, and if it resonates with you, there is plenty more over on my blog page and in previous episodes to keep you going.
